Start-tri athletes rip it up at season opening!!!

by The Coaches on June 15, 2012

It is now June and triathlon season in the northeast is in full swing. For many athletes, May marked the opening of triathlon racing. Athletes were anxious to put their hard winter work to the test.

Laura Fucci placed fourth overall for women in the JS Kickoff Punt triathlon. The next weekend, brought a full schedule of races with the Harriman 1/2, the Jerseyman, the Columbia triathlon, the Doc and Sok triathlon and the RedBank triathlon.

Wayne Levitt finished strong at the Harriman half as a tune up for the inaugural IMNYC! At the “new” Jerseyman triathlon former start-tri athletes Scott Johnson, Barbara Maguire (both doubling up that weekend) and Eric Bridge all raced hard along with coach Mickey and Alminda Brundyn. On Sunday at Greenbrookracing’s famous Doc and Sok triathlon, Ira Goldberg and Dan Simonetti had great opening races. Denise Castelli overcame her fears of the open water to conquer Watchung Lake! Moving down to Red Bank NJ, athletes(and training partners) Sue Lawson and Amy Campbell battled to 1st and 2nd in their age group!!!

Moving further south to Columbia, Maryland, athletes Brian Moffett and Lori Freeland-Morris ripped it up against a super competitive field.

Former Start-tri athletes JT Thompson and Tucker McKeever took on the American Zofingen Challenge in the Catskills of NY. JT placed 3rd in his AG after coming off a string of medical issues!!!

Memorial Day weekend brought us several swim events that many athletes used as training sessions. Laurie Beland was able to get a taste of the Hudson in preparation for the inaugural IMNYC…

The first weekend in June brought several more start-tri athletes up to Middleburry, CT for arguably one of the toughest 1/2 IMs around!!! Raphael Zagury, Ed Riley, Brett Skolnik and Alminda Brundyn took on this brutal course in pretty good conditions. For Ed, Raphael and Alminda this was good test to see where they stand before taking on IM Lake Placid.

The next weekend saw a big group of start-tri athletes and friends take on the hills of the Adirondacks as they trained in the annual camp in Lake Placid (under ideal conditions).

That weekend also brought us to Cambridge, MD for the Eagleman 70.3 race as well as to Staten Island for the famous Flat as a Pancake Triathlon. At the Eagleman race (you guessed it) the warm temperatures ate up much of the field except for start-tri athlete Pete Kavalus in his quest to break 5 hours…(5:50 was his PR from last year). He came in at 5:00:23. Wathch for Pete as he takes on the other 50-54 year olds in Rhode Island and again at IM Louisville!!! At the Pancake, Joe Patanella ordered ideal weather as he does every year. Start-tri athletes Laura Fucci and Laurie Beland competed alongside many other athletes that faithfully support this great race director and his races.

Look for Start-tri at the races over the rest of the summer!!! Start-tri is pleased to coach many on their Ironman quest this year. Athletes will be competing in IM Lake Placid, Ironman NYC, Ironman Louisville, Ironman Wisconsin, Ironman REV3 as well as numerous other non-IM events!!! Train smart, have fun…
